More Americans will be packing their bags and hitting the road or the runaway for getaways this summer despite rising gas prices and a stubborn economy.
The latest American Express "spending and saving tracker" survey shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans will be taking a vacation this summer. They'll spend an average of $1,200 per person and most plan two one-week getaways plus three weekend trips.
Florida is the top getaway destination within the U.S. California is second followed by New York, North Carolina and Texas.
For travelers looking for getaways outside of the U.S. the Bahamas is the top pick. Many will also go north to Canada. And Europe is also a popular choice for getaways with Italy, the U.K. and France all in the top fiv
